Main trekking areas of Kerala are located in Munnar and Thekkady. The Western Ghat mountains offer opportunities for trekking and camping as well as a number of adventure sports.

Trekking at Munnar

Munnar is a tea town founded by the British in the 18th century. Due to its mountainous terrain, it has been highly regarded as a trekking destination for travelers to South India. Most of Munnar's higher reaches (7000-8500 ') are forested and notified as reserve forests. The ecology is grassland-shola type (high altitude montane forests). This ecology is fragile but has breathtaking areas for trekking. The trek starts from the Silent valley Estate of the premier tea company Tata Tea (formerly Finlay Estate).

Anamudi, Rajamala, Meesapulimala Top Station, Devikulam are trekking paths in Munnar.Rajamala,15 km from Munnar, is the natural habit of the Nilgiri Tahr. Half the worlds population of the rare mountain goat which is fast becoming extinct, is now found here. It is an ideal place for adventure tourism.Thommankuthu,17 km from Thodupuzha, is an ideal place for adventure tourism.Tea and Tahrs trekking and camping tour is in Munnar. The trek is through highly mountainous terrain.

Trekking at Thekkady

Main trekking areas in Thekkady are Periyar Tiger Reserve , Kurisumala near Kumily, Pullumedu, Ottakathalamedu, Cheeyappara near Neriamangalam, Keezharkuth and Grampi near Vandiperiyar. The forest department conducts daily treks from the boat landing station at Thekkady to the Nellikkampetty area and Manakkavala. The trekking programme is in the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Trekking at Ranipuram

Ranipuram is 85 km from Kasaragod. Situated 750 m above sea level, Ranipuram is famous for its trekking trails and varied vegetation-evergreen shola woods, monsoon forests and grasslands. This area was formerly known as Madathumala. Wild elephants can be seen wandering on the top of the mountains.

Backwater biking

Kerala is well known as the land of canals, lagoons, lakes and rivers. These backwaters with their peculiar landscape have had a distinct impact on the lifestyle of the people who live along its banks. Kerala's uniqueness lies in these backwaters found nowhere else in the world. They form a beautiful and economically viable feature of Kerala. The itineraries will take you to periyar tiger reserve and then through the mountain roads to munnar. Retreat to a camp as you pitch your tent in the periyar tiger reserve under the guidance and care of experts. Trek through the forests for 3 days wherein you will be relocating your camping sites eachday. Bamboo rafts will take you across the lake while you move 20 - 30 kms a day. The experience will leave you absolutely in awe of the majesty of the tropical jungle and an experience of a life time. At munnar, you will be camping for 2 days at altitudes of over 7000 feet and experience the uniqueness of the shola-grassland eco systems.

Wildlife Tours :

The journey will take you through the forests of the periyar tiger reserve. Chinnar wildlife sanctuary, parambikulam wild life sanctuary and the wayanad wildlife sanctuaries where you will hope to see elephants, gaur, deer and occasionally the big cats like the tiger, leopard and panther. You will be trekking through the forests or moving around in jeeps where trekking is not permitted. Your accommodation will be arranged in forest lodges or estate bungalows. The duration will be of 4 - 8 days. The 4 day tour covers the periyar tiger reserve, chinnar wildlife sanctuary and the eravikulam national park. The 8 day journey will additionally take you to parambikulam and wayanad wildlife sanctuaries.

Wildlife Adventure

Kerala is home to some of the most well known wildlife sanctuaries of the country. Animals, birds and reptiles that inhabit these sanctuaries are a varied lot and offer a wildlife aficionado a joy that they cannot forget in their life.

Wildlife Destinations

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary - The most prominent wildlife sanctuary in the state of Kerala is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, though, Tigers are fewer in number, yet they attract most of the attention from the visitors. Some of the other animals that can be seen roaming around in the tropical evergreen and semi evergreen forests of the park are Elephants, Otters, Nilgiri Langurs, Common Langurs, Bonnet Macaques, Lion Tailed Macaque, Malabar Squirrel, Wild Boar, Sambar and Barking Deer. Around 200 species of birds can also be seen fluttering their wings in the park.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary - The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is an abode of some of the most beautiful and even rare variety of bird species. On board the houseboats and motorboats, bird lovers can see their favourite birds flying from the branch of one tree to another. During migratory season, birds like Siberian Cranes, Parrots, Teal, Larks, Flycatchers, Wood Beetle, and other birds are seen here

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is blessed with a soothing greenery that is heartening as visitors go around sighting animals and birds. Some of the most prominent wildlife species that can be seen here include Elephant, Spotted Deer, Bison, Tiger, Cheetah and Wild Bear.

Trekking

With mountains around, it is quiet obvious that trekking is one of the prime adventure option in Kerala. With loads of beauty around trekking becomes all the more enjoyable in the hilly regions of Kerala.

Trekking destinations

Agastyarkoodam Peak - Around 61 km from the capital city of Thiruvanantpuram lies this immensely beautiful Agastyarkoodam Peak. Towering to height of 1868 m above the sea level, the peak allows trekkers some really exciting adventure. Views of the spectacular 'Neelakurinji', a flower, is completely enamouring enroute. It is said that the peak was an abode of a bachelor sage, Agastya. Hence women are restricted from climbing the peak so as to respect the the status of the renowned sage. The ideal time to undertake trekking here is between the months of December to April. Passes need to be obtained from the forest department of Thirunvanantpuram for this purpose.

Chembra Peak - Rising 2100 m above sea level, the Chembra peak is accessible from Kalpetta. The views for trekkers include tea plantation areas as well forests. This trek is considered a bit risky, hence only experienced trekkers should make an attempt to climb it. A half a day trek will take tourists to the summit where a beautiful lake will infuse a sense of renewed vigour in the souls of the trekkers.

Pythal Mala - Situated 4500 feet above the sea level, Pythal Mala requires trekkers to undertake a arduous 6 kms trek to reach the zenith of the hill. The spectacular flora and fauna enroute keep the trekkers engaged all the while..

Backwater Cruises

With a large number of lakes, lagoons, canals, estuaries and rivers (forty-four), Kerala is a heaven for backwater cruising. Adventure freaks can board houseboats, also known as Kettuvalam, and sail through the serene waters exploring the far flung regions of Kerala.

Backwater Destinations

Alappuzha Backwaters - Known as the 'Venice of East', Alappuzha is perhaps the best place to embark on a backwater cruising trip. Scenes that are sure to enchant tourists on their cruise include vast expanse of paddy fields, small hamlets, Chinese fishing nets, flocks of ducks swimming around the banks and tiny birds flying in the sky. One unique feature of the Alappuzha backwaters is that the water here is in level with the land which ensures tourists a better look into the surrounding areas. .

Kuttunad -Yet another famous destination for backwater cruising, Kuttunad provides sparkling glimpses of the remote regions of Kerala. The place is quiet often termed as the Holland of India because of its geographical resemblance with the country. Scenes that spring up to surprise the tourists along the 75 km long stretch of backwaters include verdant green patches of paddy field, home, churches, mosque, temples etc.

Alappuzha Beach - This beach is famous for its idyllic beauty and leisure options. Kovalam Beach - This beach is just perfect if you wish to indulge in a variety of water sports activities - swimming, kayaking, surfing and skiing. You also have an opportunity to try your luck at angling here. However, there are certain rules to be followed and certain precautions to be taken if your enjoyment is to be complete.

Varkala Beach - Varkala beach is known for its religious significance, nonetheless, opportunities to enjoy water sports here are equally interesting. Most prominent of water sports that you can enjoy here include parasailing, scuba diving and windsurfing and even deep sea fishing.

Late night, arrive Mumbai and transfer to the domestic airport for your flight to Cochin by 9W 405 at 0545 hrs. On arrival in Cochin at 0730 hrs, assistance at airport and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free.

Day 02 IN COCHIN

Cochin - the palmgreen commercial town of Kerala has one of the finest natural harbours in the world. A town with a hoary past, Cochin is the gateway to Kerala.

The Jewish Synagogue - built in 1568 AD contains Grand Scrolls of the Old Testament and the copper plates containing the privileges granted to the Jews by the Cochin rulers. The floor of the synagogue is paved with exquisite Chinese hand painted tiles. The Dutch Palace was built by the Portuguese and presented to the Cochin Raja in 1555 AD. 17th century murals depicting scenes from the Indian epic, the Ramayana can be seen here. St Francis Church, built originally by the Portuguese in 1510 AD is believed to be the first church built by Europeans in India. Vasco da Gama was originally buried here. The Chinese fishing nets can be seen at the entrance of the harbour. The Chinese through trade contact taught this technique of catching fish.

Day 03 COCHIN - MUNNAR
Morning: Drive to Munnar (135 kms/04½ hrs) enroute visit tea plantations. On arrival in Munnar, check in at hotel. Afternoon: Boat ride in the lake.

Munnar (1,524 M), is the highest town of Kerala, with a cool, bracing climate exuding an old-world charm. The atmosphere is fragrant with extensive tea and cardamom plantations. There are enchanting high ranges, lakes and streams and beautiful view of low-lying clouds and the mist filled valleys.

Full day free to visit the bazaars, plantations etc.

Day 05 MUNNAR - PERIYAR
Early Morning: Drive to Periyar (100 kms/03 hrs) and on arrival, check in at hotel. Afternoon: Boat ride in Lake Periyar to watch wildlife. Later visit Kumily spice market to see and buy spices.

Periyar Tiger Reserve, 777 sq km in area is set in a rich, mixed deciduous forest, interspersed with open areas of tall grass. Periyar has a splendid artificial lake dotted with snags of dead wood, which provide a perch for waterbirds; darter, grey heron, egret and kingfisher. It is one of the finest habitats for the Asiatic elephant. These enormous mammals swim in the waters and streams and usually they can be observed during the boat ride. Periyar also holds, apart from Tiger leopard, sambar, wild dog, barking deer, the lion tailed macaque, the Nilgiri langur . The forest harbours a variety of woodland birds. Boat travel is the only means of transport in the Sanctuary.

Day 06 PERIYAR - KOTTAYAM
Early Morning: Drive to Kottayam (120 kms/03 hrs) and on arrival, switch over to the House Boat and cruise along the backwaters, passing through paddy fields, villages, market etc.

The cruise is through `Kuttanad' literally meaning the land which is lower than the sea level but is kept intact by its bunds and dikes. It is the `rice bowl' of Kerala. The rice fields are very beautiful and this lush land and surrounds governs the placid way of life of the people who live on the backwaters.

Day 07 ARRIVE ALLEPPEY - KOVALAM
Morning: Drive to Kovalam (180 kms/04½ hrs) and on arrival in Kovalam, check in at a beach resort. Rest of the day to relax at the beach or indulge in Ayurvedic massages.

Kovalam is a sheltered bay endowed with unusual beauty, located on the magnificent Arabian Sea coast. This natural bay is a safe sea-pool, free from high waves and surges. The 30 kms drive from the Tiruvanantapuram airport to the beach through groves of palms is refreshing. It is an ideal place to swim, sunbathe and perhaps enjoy the ancient rites of an Ayurvedic massage and oil bath.
